Character Conceptions – Cousin Floyd

Blog, Webcomic

Cousin Floyd is Firestone’s southern cousin. He has a natural gift of gab, and is known for getting in all kinds of trouble and mishaps. While he (generally) has fair moral compass, he is very impressionable, and easily swayed into many kinds of propositions with the promise of easy money or a large payday. He is not above telling tall tales, and using his silver tongue to tell a white lie in order to get his way…

Like his fire wielding cousin, he is an adventurer at heart, and is always down to go on an adventure where there is the promise of a handsome payday, or beautiful women abound.

He considers himself a “part-time bounty hunter”, a title that no one other than himself takes seriously… (Mainly because he is known for causing more trouble than good!) He looks up to and admires his cousin Firestone, and considers him to be one of his best friends.

He has many tall tales, and stories in which no one believes, but may have actually happened. (It’s a bit hard to take his word for it with his shoddy/sketchy reputation) One of his best talents is always having a way to find, source, or get a tip on the latest happenings around town.

Design –

I like the more simplified look I gave him compared to some of my other characters. A clean and pressed white button up shirt, suspenders, slacks, and a clean pair of dress shoes.

I think the box braids are a great fit for him too, as this is a popular African American hairstyle used to keep black men and women’s hair neat, tidy, and looks great. I gave him freckles on his face, because many characters that I recall in fiction with freckles tend to be a bit more on the mischievous side of things… No different here for this character.

Cousin Floyd is usually the reason why Firestone and the gang usually have unwanted trouble come and find them. With Cousin Floyd and Firestone now teenagers, the antics never seem to end. There is never a dull moment when Cousin Floyd is around!
